NEW DELHI: May has proved to be a good month for the utility vehicle industry as not one, but two utility vehicles have made it to top 10 list. While one is new launch, the other is making a comeback in the form of new generation.

Toyota Innova Crysta which sold 7,259 units in May. The new generation Crysta has helped the vehicle post a growth of over 44 percent, the healthiest among all in the list. Last year May, Innova sold only 5,028 units and the number had been falling consistently.

With this performance , it has outsold Hyundai Creta, the compact SUV, which has been one of the most popular SUVs in the country. Hyundai Creta on the other hand sold 7,057 units in May. Innova Crysta was launched at a price of Rs 13.83 lakh whereas Hyundai Creta is way cheaper at Rs 8.6 lakh.
Innova Crysta sales also helped Toyota overtake Tata Motors and Honda Cars in May. “Toyota has been able to do well because of the new generation Innova Crysta. It is definitely an achievement as despite the ban on big diesel vehicle, Innova Crysta has been able to perform so well,” Puneet Gupta, associate director, South Asia automotive sales forecast & advisory, IHS Automotive, had said.

Vitara Brezza has entered the list of top 10 selling passenger vehicles for the first time
The other UV in the list the is Maruti Suzuki’s compact SUV, Vitara Brezza, which was launched in March this year. It has entered the list of top 10 selling passenger vehicles for the first time. This has taken the number of models from the Maruti’s stable to 7 in the list. Vitara Brezza sold a total of 7,193 units in May placing it at 10 spot.

Maruti Suzuki continues to be top draw in the list with the top four positions safely secured by the Japanese carmaker. While the top slot is kept by Alto with sales of 19,874 units, Maruti’s sub-4m sedan Dzire was back on second spot in May after being pushed to fifth in April this year. However, sales of both the cars continued to fall. Alto and Dzire sales fell by 12 and 12.5 percent respectively.
Away from all the spotlight on the UV segment, there is an interesting competition brewing inside of Hyundai Motors. Grand i10 has overtaken Elite i20 as Hyundai’s top most selling car in the country. Grand i10 in May sold a total of 12,055 units and taking the fifth spot as compared to 10,472 units sold of premium hatchback Elite i20 which had to settle for the sixth place.

Maruti’s premium hatchback Baleno too is closing in on Elite i20 as it crossed the 10,000 units mark in May. Baleno sold a total of 10,004 units as against 9,562 units in April. Baleno was launched in October 2015 and has seen its sales rise over the months.

Maruti Suzuki’s other models which feature in the list include Wagon R, Swift and Celerio. Wagon R and Celerio, which have secured third and eighth positions, both have seen their sales grow. Given that all other models of Maruti in the list, which were being sold a year back too, have de-grown, this is a respite for the company.
Wagon R has sold 13,231 units in May, up 6.1 percent from 12,467 units in the same month last year. Celerio, on the other hand, saw its sales jump 10.9 percent to reach 7,379 units.
