Vivo India is on a roll. The smartphone manufacturer started 2019 on a good note with the Vivo V15 series. Both the Vivo V15 and the V15 Pro are great smartphones for the price they come for and helped the company double its market share in India. Following the Vivo V15 series the company announced a new Z-series in India last month and the first smartphone under this new online-centric series is the Vivo Z1 Pro. After the Vivo Z1 Pro the company has now introduced another series called the S-series and with that comes the Vivo S1. On August 7 Vivo launched its first-ever S-series smartphone aka Vivo S1 in India.
The Vivo S-series is mostly targeted to the offline buyers in the country. The Vivo S1 is already available for purchase across all offline stores in the country and will go on sale on Vivo’s e-store, Flipkart and Amazon starting August 14. The India price of the Vivo S1 starts at Rs 17,990. The question now is, should you go for the Vivo S1 or buy Vivo’s Z-series smartphone aka Vivo Z1 Pro instead that comes for starting price of Rs 14,990?
Before deciding which of the two Vivo phone you should buy let’s take a quick look at everything these smartphones offer to the consumers.
–The Vivo S1 comes with an sAMOLED display but Z1 Pro lacks that. This, however, shouldn’t worry you because the screen of the Z1 Pro gets bright enough in almost all situations. The Vivo S1 comes with a 6.38-inch super AMOLED display and offers 19:5:9 aspect ratio, 90 per cent screen-to-body-ratio and FHD+ screen resolution. In comparison, the Vivo Z1 Pro comes with a 6.53-inch FHD+ display that offers screen-to-body-ratio of 90.77 per cent and resolution of 2340×1080 pixels.
–On the hardware front the Z1 Pro is the winner as the Vivo S1 lags occasionally. The Vivo Z1 Pro is the first smartphone in India to be powered by 10mn Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chipset that supports Adreno 616GPU. For the S1 Vivo goes for MediaTek Helio P65 octa-core processor. In overall performance, the Vivo Z1 Pro beats the Vivo S1. In gaming too the Z1 Pro is a notch higher.
–Both the Vivo phones come with three cameras on the back panel. The Vivo S1 includes a primary 16-megapixel sensor, secondary 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor and third is a 2-megapixel depth sensor. In comparison, the Z1 Pro includes a 16-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel super-wide secondary sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.
–On the front the Vivo Z1 Pro includes an in-display camera while the Vivo S1 comes with Halo FullView display. Both the Vivo phones come packed with a 32MP camera on the front that helps users click stunning selfies.
–Vivo phones have always been big on battery and the Vivo S1 and Z1 Pro are no exception. The Vivo S1 comes with a 4500mAh battery setup while the Vivo Z1 Pro packs a massive 5000mAh battery. Both these Vivo phones come with 18W dual engine fast charging support.
–On the software front the Vivo Z1 Pro, as well as the Vivo S1, run FunTouch OS based on Android 9 Pie.
–Both the Vivo S1 and the Vivo Z1 Pro come in several variants. The Vivo S1 variants are — 4GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, 6GB RAM and 64GB storage and 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The Vivo Z1 Pro also comes in three variants — 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage.
–The Vivo Z1 Pro comes with rear-mounted fingerprint sensor while the Vivo S1 comes with flash in-display fingerprint sensor. Both the phones include face unlock support as well.
As for the pricing, the Vivo Z1 Pro base model that comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage costs Rs 14,990. The other two variants including 6GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB + 128GB will go on sale for Rs 16,990 and 18990, respectively. In comparison, the price of Vivo S1 base model starts at Rs 17,990. This model comes with 4GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There are 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model and 6GB RAM + 128GB of internal storage that come for Rs 18,990 and Rs 19,990.
It should be noted that the Vivo Z1 Pro and the Vivo S1 are targeted to a different audience. The Vivo Z1 Pro is for the consumers who buy smartphones online while the Vivo S1 for the offline market. With the Z1 Pro Vivo wants to grow its online retail business while with the Vivo S1 the company wants to expand its offline business.
Both the phones — Vivo Z1 Pro and Vivo S1 — are decent but I personally prefer the Vivo Z1 Pro considering the value it offers for the price. The Vivo S1 comes with the latest trend like gradient design, Halo FullView display, in-display fingerprint sensor and more, which is great. But the Vivo S1 seems slightly pricey at Rs 17,990. There are innumerable smartphones like Realme X, Redmi Note 7 Pro available under Rs 20,000 price point and the high price can possibly make it difficult for the Vivo S1 to strive in the competition. In comparison, I believe the Vivo Z1 Pro compares pretty well with the competitors.
So, if you want a phone that offers power and battery life and is available online the Vivo Z1 Pro should be the one you should go for. Whereas, if you want a phone that looks stunning and comes with latest trends like in-display fingerprint sensor then the Vivo S1 should be considered.
